I have decided to contribute regularly to this blog (at least for the time being) now that everyone has stopped reading. Hoorah!
Anyway, I just got back from Seattle. I have to say it is a rather nice city.... has more of a city feel than Vancouver. Not like that's difficult to do...
I once said on camera that what irritated me most about America was the complete absence of the "Left." While I still believe that the mainstream of American politics is too conservative, I certainly cannot say with much credibility that the left wing does not exist in the country. I ran into a young gentlemen around my age who was protesting with some fellow Bush-haters (ain't nothing wrong with that) outside Westlake Centre. Naturally, seeing the Kerry-Edwards signs, I took them to be your run of the mill Democrats. Not so.
"Sir, are you aware that our country is crumbling?"
"Well actually I am from Canada but yes I am aware that your country is crumbling."
A relatively pleasant conversation ensued... he seemed to be of reasonable intelligence, if not a bit nutty. He gave me the relevant pamphlets and books they were distributing... in exchange I donated a buck. A gross simplification of their argument: The foundation of the US economy is withering, causing a global economic collapse that will far surpass the devastation of the Great Depression. Millions around the world will die. The Neo-Cons are lying and have no solution. FEAR! FEAR! FEAR!
I find it bitterly ironic that these sworn enemies of Bush use fear as a means of gaining support. Michael Moore anyone? Too bad.
While I can appreciate their disillusionment with the current administration, their platform is far too conspiracy-theorish for me. It actually irritates me quite a bit. It makes me want to wash myself clean of any political identity. I'm just so sick of the negativity that's spewed from the mouths of the political periphery. Ugh... I feel sick... need a break from politics. (If only until Tuesday)
Need to think happy thoughts. That put me in a bad mood. I need something positive to focus on because you know what? Negativity is vastly overrated!
